Possible rollingstock 1948-1965

The J72 and 3MTs could be used for freight services, mostly comprising cattle/sheep I would suspect from reading about the area's produce, and the fact that there is a cattle dock at the station!

You could assume as well that the 3MTs could have pulled small passenger services comprising 1-3 coaches.

The DMUs are obviously passenger services.

  1. I doubt either loco mentioned would have been seen on the line; the J72's were shunting locos and could be found at either end in Hull or York. And I'm afraid I've seen no reference to 3MT tanks running on the branch although Hull Dairycoates shed had a solitary 3MT tender loco for a little while.

In terms of ready-to-run locos available all is not lost! Bachmann's WD 2-8-0 would be perfect as they handled a lot of the through freights on the line. Also from Bachmann the B1 is ideal for many passenger services. Before DMU's took over a lot of services D49s were a mainstay of stopping passenger services; Hornby produced a D49, although an older model is dimensionally sound and a good basis for detailing or further rebuilding. Photos also show that 5MTs worked the line too - 73157 is one we have modelled, using a Bachmann model, following photos of it at Pocklington!

If you're happy to build kits, DJH and Nu-Cast have produced kits for the various sub-classes of B16s - they handled a lot of the freight alongside the WD locos. Until their withdrawal B16s worked many of the York - Hull goods services.

This book by CT Goode is well worth investing in as it has a nice little history of the line and a summary of the motive power used throughout the line's existence.

I hope that helps - if I can help any further just ask! We have plenty of books and photos on railways in East Yorkshire, the 'remains' nearby(!) and my dad also travelled on the line before it closed.
